Of uni, driving and a rather worrying trend!

Mon Jun 29, 2009, 12:29 AM
I've been to two open days at various universities now-namely Oxford and Aston, with Oxford being my clear fave- but I know it's nigh on impossible to get in- but I'll apply anyway XD One of the colleges had a bar in the basement-with blue shiny LEDs- it looked like some breed of vodka spaceship O_o
In other news I had my first driving lesson on Friday-and mangaged to stall in front of a van XD
And now for the worrying trend-my part time job is selling books at festivals, car boot sales and carnivals. I normally run the stall with the kids books on, as well as a small stock pile of model cars and various other random toys-but mostly books. It's normal for some kids to not want to look at books-especially when the stall over the way is selling action man or something-but I have noticed something rather worrying- children who take a genuine interest in the books and reading in general-being told by their parents 'oh don't worry Timmy, you can watch it on TV' is this a national or global phenomenon or just something purely confined to the area around Nuneaton? Thankfully most of the children who bought books had supportive parents, who actively encouraged them to read-which is a relief. Should have more time on the internets once the summer holidays hit- come on July 10th D:D

They were actually encouraging their kids NOT to read? That's frankly bizarre, considering that the majority of our generation were prodded with a sharp stick to read more...

It sounds like a rather worrying trend for sure - how old were the kids taking an interest? Because the younger they are, the more worrying it is, as it would seem at a really young kid would want their parent to read it to them, or at least help, as most parents would do, but pawning them off to the TV to let it do that job for them...that is worrying. Still worrying if it's older young kids (if that even is a phrase), parents actively dicouraging a cheap, fun and harmless hobby, especially one that gives as much knowledge and opens one's eyes as much as reading, because they can't be bothered to spend 30 seconds getting the book or for whatever reason (price canny be a factor, as if they can't afford a book, then why on Earth would they be where they are? O_o) then that is just unbelievably ignorant and stupid O_O

Most of the kids looked about 8ish- so they're going to need to read set books and stuff from school- I just can't believe that parents would discourage their children from reading >__> it makes no sense

I know! Times are a changing- soon we'll have flying cars and live off pills, and the TV will teach us everything :D

It really, really doesn't make any kind of sense at all o_o All I remember from growing up was how good reading is, and I'll certainly encourage my kids if I ever have any to read for pleasure.

Yeah, I remember the same kind of things >__> times are a changin'...(or the people who live in and around Nuneaton are just very, very strange)

Eep...mind you, the TV thing is already pretty true...remember watching all those "CDs" with miss Hill?

I'm going to Oxford tomorrow! ^-^ was the trip any good?

The reading thing is somewhat depressing... Just be happy that you are doing your small part in the great literary battle to ensure that the trend does not continue :D
